Bharatanatyam is a classical Indian dance form originating in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. This dance form denotes various 19th and 20th century reconstructions of Sadir, the art of temple dancers. Sadir in turn, is derived from ancient dance forms that includes some acrobatic karanas. Bharatnatyam is usually accompanied by Carnatic music. It has its inspirations from the sculptures of the ancient temple of Chidambaram. Bharatanatyam, as the name depicts is the combination of: 'Bha' - Bhavam (means expression), 'Ra' - Ragam (means music), 'Ta - Talam (means beat or rhythm) and Natyam (means dance) in Tamil. Bharatnatyam is considered to be a fire-dance — the mystic manifestation of the metaphysical element of fire in the human body. It is one of the five major styles (one for each element) that include Odissi (element of water), Kuchipudi (element of earth), Mohiniattam (element of air) and Kathakali (element of sky or aether). The movements of an authentic Bharatanatyam dancer resemble the movements of a dancing flame. Contemporary Bharatanatyam is rarely practiced as Natya Yoga, a sacred meditational tradition, except by a few orthodox schools (see Yoga and dance). Bharatnatyam proper is a solo dance, with two aspects, lasya, the graceful feminine lines and movements, and tandava Ananda Thandavam (Tamil) (the dance of Shiva), masculine aspect, which is identical to the Yin and Yang in the Chinese culture. The Indo European Dance Festival is an exhilarating platform of culture and knowledge exchange in India, combining workshop training and stage performances by artistes from India and Europe. Nrityashree Alaknanda envisioned and organised the 1st Indo European Dance festival, in 2010, with a vision to introduce Classical Court Dance styles of the world and strengthen cultural exchange of dance styles forming a magnificent mélange. The success story of IEDF was repeated in 2011 and 2012, and today, it is already into its fourth year of successful run. With each passing year the Festival is tirelessly expanding its horizons, growing in its magnitude and reach, and finding a special place in hearts of Indian audience. Buoyed by the overwhelming response of the audience, Nrityashree Alaknanda now brings the 4th Indo European Dance Festival (IEDF), 2013. The festival focuses on global harmony and friendship, bringing the artists from all over the globe to create a pulse of joy, love and peace. IEDF 2013 will be showcasing Baroque Dance from Poland, Renaissance dance from France, Flamenco dance from Spain, Russian Folk Dance, and richcultural heritage of our country represented through Kathak Dance. All the dance styles have journeyed through the court period to enrich its art style. India is one of the world's oldest civilizations. The Indian culture, often labeled as an amalgamation of several various cultures, spans across the Indian subcontinent and has been influenced and shaped by a history that is several thousand years old. Throughout the history of India, Indian culture has been heavily influenced by Dharmic religions. They have been credited with shaping much of Indian philosophy, literature, architecture, art and music. Greater India was the historical extent of Indian culture beyond the Indian subcontinent. This particularly concerns the spread of Hinduism, Buddhism, architecture, administration and writing system from India to other parts of Asia through the Silk Road by the travelers and maritime traders during the early centuries of the Common Era. To the west, Greater India overlaps with Greater Persia in the Hindu Kusch and Pamir Mountains. During the medieval period, Islam played a significant role in shaping Indian cultural heritage. Over the centuries, there has been significant integration of Hindus, Jain's, and Sikhs with Muslims across India Don't forget to like, comment or subscribe. Share this video if you like.
